Our studio,
workshop, and store are located in Calcata, a medieval village in the
middle of a Natural Park with woodland, waterfalls and stone outcrops.
An old house has been completely restored to house the design studio,
and opposite this another has been transformed into the show room.
CALCATA
A little village perched atop volcanic tufa cliffs in
the middle of the Valle del Treja, the river that has carved green canyons
into the countryside north of Rome. Calcata is surrounded by the Valle
del Treja Regional Park, where further building is forbidden.
History
Calcata has almost three thousand years of history,
and traces of human presence date from prehistoric times. In one of
the cliffs facing Calcata you can still see signs of the Faliscan and
Etruscan civilisations. Enduring as a sacred site as well as trading
point, in Roman times the fertility of the surrounding countryside permitted
the construction of numerous villas.
The name Calcata appears for the first time in a document dating from
the Eighth Century, under the pontificate of Adrian I (772-795). The
territory came into the possession of the Anguillara nobles, who built
the castle at Calcata (end of the Thirteenth Century) as well as defensive
walls, both of which have been restored in the last two years.
Calcata abandoned
The original inhabitants of Calcata began to abandon
the medieval village before the second world war because of frequent
collapses of parts of the cliff-face but above all because of bad living
conditions, and laid the foundations of a new settlement two kilometres
away to which most of them moved in the 1960s.
A new life
During these years the village, instead of depopulating,
Calcata began a new life as an alternative to the city and an ideal
place for artists to work and live.
The tufa houses of old Calcata filled with artists and intellectuals
who restored it bringing new light to the village. Old vegetable patches
became gardens, natural art galleries or open-air workshops.
